Project Manager

Reports to: Construction Manager / Operations Manager

General Summary:
Master Pools Alta Ltd. specializes in the design and construction of commercial and municipal aquatic facilities. Working throughout Western Canada, we partner with General Contractors to build the largest swimming pool structures and mechanical systems. We strive to provide the timely, knowledgeable, and well-coordinated installation and commissioning of water circulation, filtration, and chemical treatment systems. We also participate in the design process and advocate for safe, high-performance, and operator-friendly systems in the larger Canadian aquatic community. Aquatics construction presents unique challenges and unique opportunities. Our team combines the skills of plumbers, carpenters, engineering technicians, and general construction experience. Collectively we strive to complete high quality work in a safe, efficient, well-coordinated and accountable manner.
The Project Manager will have direct responsibility for the administration of individual projects. This comprises three general areas of activity:
Project Administration
A successful project requires marshalling the expertise of numerous individuals to ensure critical administrative tasks are performed. The Project Manager will:
- Read, evaluate, and interpret project scope of work in preparation and during construction.
- Produce project schedules and labor effort allocations for field personnel in conjunction with Construction Manager and Project Foremen.
- Examine project designs for conformance with applicable codes and good mechanical practice, in conjunction with Commissioning and Technical Relations Manager.
- Oversee shop drawings preparation and equipment ordering in conjunction with Project Coordinator. Oversee equipment and material ordering. Use CAD or CAD-related programs as required.
- Interpret provincial workplace OH&S standards and participate in continuous update of company standards, in conjunction with Project Coordinator.
- Track project information in an organized manner using project management software and MS office applications.
- Assist with the creation of project documentation (i.e. O+M manuals) and with project closeout.
Project Team Management
Project implementation requires extensive work with other Project Managers in coordination and planning tasks. These will include:
- Participate in establishing project schedules and critical path with General Contractors and related sub-trades.
- Participate in coordination and project planning:
- Demonstrate a clear leadership approach to senior project team members.
- Demonstrate technical expertise and project credibility in commercial mechanical construction.
- Project a clear vision for the execution of a project to Construction Manager and General Contractor personnel.
- Emphasize a collaborative, solution-focused approach to conflict management, but apply different approaches as required by the situation.
- Support Project Foremen and field personnel in case of on-site coordination disagreements.
Management of Field Personnel
The Project Manager will have most direct contact with field personnel and Project Foremen. They will provide organization, technical, and personal/developmental leadership to the field personnel team as required:
- Ensure adherence and use of company OH&S policy by field personnel. Oversee establishment of safe work procedures for site-specific conditions.
- Provide a clear vision for the execution of the project, in term of construction documents, project timelines, and methods of construction, to Project Foreman and field personnel.
- Provide clear technical guidance to Project Foreman and other Project Team Members.
- Monitor and provide quality control over piping and equipment installations. Provide feedback to Project Foreman in a timely manner as needed.
- Work with Project Foremen to develop internal schedules and goals for site activities. Implement, adjust and facilitate meeting these goals.
- Encourage good organizational habits and routine communication from Project Foreman.
- Evaluate field personnel in conjunction with Construction Manager and Operations Manager.
The successful candidate for this position will:
- Possess commercial construction experience, technical certificate, and/or Journeyman’s Ticket, preferably in mechanical contracting or plumbing/gas fitting. Experience in pool mechanical construction is considered an asset but not a requirement for this position. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Possess intermediate proficiency in digital drafting and project management programs.
- Emphasize a collaborative, solution-focused approach to conflict management, but apply different approaches as required by the situation.
- Lead field personnel by example in performance and behavior.
Formal project management training (PMP certification or equal) would be considered an asset.
